Dopo i sold-out nei Paesi Bassi, The Gathering si preparano a celebrare uno degli album più iconici della loro carriera con il tour “Mandylion 30 Years”, che farà tappa in Italia per un’unica, attesissima serata, il 23 maggio a Trezzo sull’Adda (MI).
Pubblicato nel 1995, “Mandylion” ha segnato un momento fondamentale nella storia della band olandese, contribuendo a ridefinire i confini del gothic metal e influenzando profondamente un’intera generazione di ascoltatori e musicisti.
Fondata nel 1989 nei pressi di Oss, la formazione ha attraversato negli anni numerose trasformazioni stilistiche, passando dagli esordi gothic/doom metal a una progressiva evoluzione verso sonorità più atmosferiche e sperimentali, tra alternative rock, trip rock ed elettronica.

Tornate in Italia per un concerto unico dedicato ai 30 anni di “Mandylion”, dopo i sold-out nei Paesi Bassi. Come descrive il rapporto con il pubblico italiano?
“I Paesi Bassi sono piuttosto sobri, con i piedi per terra. Per questo esibirsi in Paesi dove le persone esprimono la propria passione in modo più aperto è sempre qualcosa di molto speciale. Non è che gli olandesi apprezzino meno la musica, sono semplicemente più riservati. Per questo mi aspetto ancora una volta un pubblico entusiasta in Italia...”.
“Mandylion” ha influenzato profondamente un’intera generazione. Quando incontrate fan che vi seguono da trent’anni, così come chi vi ha scoperti più tardi, quali emozioni suscita questo dialogo continuo tra passato e presente?
“Sono molto orgogliosa che l’album abbia avuto un impatto così forte e sia diventato quasi un classico. Ancora oggi incontro cantanti che mi raccontano di aver iniziato a cantare grazie a “Mandylion” o ragazze che hanno trovato la fiducia per fare musica heavy grazie ai The Gathering. All’epoca non ci pensavo molto, ma ora mi rendo conto che ero una delle pochissime donne nella scena heavy. Oggi è molto diverso: ci sono molte più donne, anche batteriste e tecniche del suono. È una cosa bellissima!…”.
Questa reunion è nata per celebrare un capitolo ben preciso della vostra storia. Com’è stato ritrovarsi dopo tanti anni?
“È stato soprattutto molto naturale. Quando mi guardo intorno durante le prove o i concerti, mi sembra la cosa più normale del mondo fare di nuovo musica insieme. Abbiamo vissuto così tanto insieme che quasi non ci si accorge degli anni passati…”.
Nel corso della carriera avete attraversato numerose trasformazioni sonore. Quanto è stato importante non sentirvi confinati in un solo genere o in un’unica epoca?
“Restare ancorati ad uno stile avrebbe sicuramente reso la mia carriera più semplice e gestibile! Ma non è mai stato un obiettivo cambiare per forza. Scrivo sempre con il cuore e se sento l’ispirazione di dare una certa direzione alla musica, non posso ignorarla. In oltre trent’anni forse un paio di volte ho fatto qualcosa pensando potesse piacere di più o essere più commerciale, ma è sempre stata una delusione. Ho deciso molto tempo fa che non l’avrei mai più fatto. Amo tanti stili diversi e questo fa parte di me…”.
Sebbene “Mandylion” venga spesso associato al gothic-metal, riascoltandolo oggi emergono molte sfumature emotive e atmosferiche. Quale aspetto dell’album ritiene sia stato maggiormente arricchito dal tempo?
“Quello che mi colpisce di più è quanto fossimo ancora grezzi, non rifiniti. Salivamo sul palco vestiti come per andare a fare la spesa. Musicalmente si sentono chiaramente le sfumature acustiche degli strumenti. L’album è davvero un ponte tra grunge e doom metal, ma all’epoca non ci pensavamo affatto. Sono cose che si notano solo guardando indietro…”.
Se dovesse descrivere questo tour celebrativo e in particolare il concerto al Live Club con un’unica immagine o sensazione, quale sceglierebbe?
“Nostalgia!…”.

Following sold-out performances in the Netherlands, The Gathering are set to celebrate one of the most iconic albums of their career with the “Mandylion 30 Years” tour, which will stop in Italy on May 23 in Trezzo sull’Adda (MI).
Originally released in 1995, “Mandylion” marked a pivotal moment in the history of the Dutch band, helping redefine the boundaries of gothic metal and profoundly influencing an entire generation of listeners and musicians.
Founded in 1989 near Oss, the band has undergone numerous stylistic transformations over the years, evolving from their early gothic/doom metal roots toward more atmospheric and experimental sounds, blending alternative rock, trip rock, and electronic elements.
You are returning to Italy for a one-off concert celebrating the 30th anniversary of “Mandylion”, following the sold-out shows in the Netherlands. How would you describe your relationship with the Italian audience?
“The Dutch are fairly down-to-earth, so performing in countries where people express their passion more openly is always very special. It’s not that the Dutch enjoy music any less, but they’re simply a bit more reserved. So I expect we’ll once again be playing in front of an enthusiastic audience in Italy…”.
“Mandylion” profoundly influenced an entire generation. When you meet fans who have followed you for three decades, as well as those who discovered your music later on, what emotions does this ongoing dialogue between past and present evoke for you?
“I’m very proud that the album has had such a strong impact and has become something of a classic. Even now, I meet singers who tell me they started singing because of Mandylion, or women who found the confidence to create heavy music thanks to The Gathering. At the time, I didn’t really think much about it, but I now realize I was one of the very few women in the heavy scene. That’s very different today there are many more women involved, including female drummers and sound engineers. That’s truly wonderful...”.
This reunion was conceived to celebrate a very specific chapter of your history. What was it like to come together again after all these years?
“It mainly feels very natural. When I look around during rehearsals or shows, it feels like the most normal thing in the world that we’re making music together again. We’ve been through so much that you hardly notice how many years have passed…”.
Throughout your career, you have undergone numerous stylistic transformations. How important has it been for you not to feel confined to a single genre or a particular era?
“Sticking to one style would certainly have made my career easier and more manageable! But it has never been a goal to change just for the sake of it. I always write from the heart, and if I feel inspired to give the music a certain direction, I simply can’t ignore it. In more than 30 years, maybe once or twice I did something thinking it might appeal more to certain fans or be commercially successful and it was always disappointing. A long time ago, I decided I would never do that again. I love many different musical styles, and that’s part of who I am…”.
Although “Mandylion” is often associated with gothic metal, listening to it today reveals a wide range of emotional and atmospheric nuances. In your view, which aspect of the album has been most enriched by the passage of time?
“What stands out to me most is how unpolished we still were. We went on stage dressed the same way we would go grocery shopping. Musically, you can clearly hear the acoustic nuances of the instruments. The album truly bridges grunge and doom metal, but we didn’t think about that at all at the time. You only notice things like that when you look back…”.
If you were to describe this celebratory tour and the Live Club performance in particular with a single image or sensation, what would it be?
“Nostalgia!…”.
